Master Bathroom Completed!!!!

No one in this family is more thrilled than Greg to be finished with our master bathroom/closet! He has been working on this project (concurrently with many other household projects which I may post about later) for just under 3 years! What started as, "I can't stand this leaking faucet" turned into a full demolition of the bathroom and closet down to studs and floor joists. I still need to find the perfect mirror and artwork for the walls, but the construction phase is absolutely, finally finished!

Let's start with photos of the closet. Here is the closet at the time we moved into the house.
April 10, 2010

During the renovation. Love that black rubberized floor tile that was under the carpet! We were initially going to open up the closet to the bathroom fully and put a pocket door between our bedroom and the closet, later we came to our senses.

10 weeks before Addison's birthday.

2 weeks before Addison's birthday
Notice we still had ancient door to the upper deck on the house.

We had to find a way to bring the
heating duct out of the closet. The
original closet did not deal with this
issue and so we always kept the doors
ajar to allow the heat to come out into
the room which was annoying at best.
Here we are on March 10, 2012! Finishing the closet was the last piece of the puzzle. We had initially decided to put in a closet system, but when we attempted that in early January, we realized that the closet was too shallow for it. This meant it was back to the drawing board again. It honestly turned out 20 times better than it would have looked!
Greg used his router table to custom
build the doors of the closet. Yet
another learning experience as they say.
You can also see the pocket door that
he installed between the closet and the
bathroom.

As you can see, we finally have our clothes hanging in the closet!!! Now I just need to find a shoe solution for the ride side of the cabinet.

Now onto the Bathroom photos. I'll try to keep it short. The first two show the bathroom as it was when we moved in. The door opening into the room was just awful and made you feel very cramped. There was also lovely flowered wallpaper that was peeling at the seams due to all the moisture (there wasn't a originally a bathroom fan).

This was the start of the demo in June 2010. We really don't miss the pink tub, and especially not the open back which required that you hang two overlapping curtains to use the shower. Notice how close the tub was to the toilet. When the wall came down between the closet and the bathroom, we had the plumber move the new tub down about a foot so we could put a built-in in the bathroom for towels.

Now things were really heating up.

Happy Birthday Greg!

There go the walls. Eventually the entire
ceiling came down as well.

10 weeks before Addison's birthday
The upstairs of the house has a definite sag in the floor
(which we were aware of when we bought the house).
We had to fix this in the bathroom before we could lay
down tile. Greg and Charles put in sister joists to level
the floor. An added benefit is that you no longer feel
like a drunk person when you're sitting on the
toilet!

Did I mention how hot it was this July?

Putting up the ceiling. Look at this worker bee!
He's really amazing.

Trying to get the walls of the tub ready
for Matt to visit and help us
tile.

Matt was here from Utah to help us tile. He was the genius behind the layout of the tile.

I had an absolute meltdown about two weeks before Addison's birthday. Greg conceded and agreed to hire someone to tile the floor and grout both the tub surround and floor. This allowed for us to work on painting the walls and starting on the bead-board. My desire was to have a functioning toilet/shower before we brought her home. I wanted so desperately to move back into our bedroom (which had been a staging area for all the construction tools for the last four months). This is about as far at the bathroom got, but we did move back into our room the night before we went to the hospital!

6 Days before Addison's birthday

Greg custom designed a towel bar the
length of the back wall to hang wet
towels. It has been great!
Okay, skip ahead to March 10, 2012. I'm not really sure when the toilet/tub became functional as we were more than a little distracted with the new baby. All pictures began to have a subject of Addison and not so much the house renovations anymore. Like I said previously, at some point we made a design change and decided to put in a pocket door between the bathroom and closet. We also had a pro come out and remove the door to the balcony and put in a window in the closet.
We stripped and re-stained the
previous cabinet and Greg made new
door/drawer fronts to update to our
preferred style.
Greg built in this towel storage
just beside the toilet. The upper level
has a pull down opening to store things.

This is looking out of the bathroom toward the closet. Greg made all the molding and door/window trims, and is in the process of switching over the whole house to the new style.

View from the master bedroom looking through the closet and into the bathroom. Like I said, now I just need to find a mirror and artwork (which is not my specialty)! We couldn't be happier with the final result.
